Vilnius University, one of the oldest and most famous higher educational institutions in Central Europe, was founded in 1579.
Vilnius University does not only take pride in prominent personalities it educated, achievements in science and education, but also in rich collections amassed during more than four hundred years, the unique heritage of architecture and art.
It is not by chance that the old ensemble of Vilnius University represents Lithuania in the Mini-Europe – Miniature Model Park in Brussels. Lithuania is the only country in Europe, which sets great store by its University.
The old ensemble of Vilnius University takes up a whole block in the Old Town bordered by Universiteto, Šv. Jono, Pilies and Skapo streets. This is a unique complex of buildings that formed in the 16th –19th centuries and which reflects the architectural styles that prevailed in Lithuania: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Classicism.
Vilnius University is famous for 13 yards of varying size and shape, the magnificent Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, and the nearby belfry that is the tallest structure in the Old Town, as well as the Astronomical Observatory that was the first one to be founded Europe.
